It's being touted as the hip-hop brother of "This is Spinal Tap," but "This is Primal Rap" deserves leagues more credit than that.

With a spoof storyline intertwining with real interviews with LA's biggest underground emcees (KRS-One, 2Mex, Rifle Man, Riddlore), "Primal Rap" offers the perfect balance of entertainment and information.

The story follows a freestyle duo's quest for street cred. Guard-Lyc is an indie-hearted nice guy who plays "beats" by strumming gruffly on an acoustic guitar while diva wankster Lil' Young (painfully) freestyles. Along their journey, the two bring up topics pertaining to underground hip-hop culture, which are seamlessly explained in interviews with the real artists. For example, when Guard-Lyc and Lil' Young make a song about "bitches," an interview with 2Mex explains that as much as sexism should be combated, it's something emcees continue to resort to in order to seem more authoritative.

But the heavy topics don't weigh down the comedy. In fact, I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. Lil' Young's encounters with coked-out producer Wayne create laugh-out-loud scenes that poke fun at hip-hop culture, like when Wayne hands Lil' Young a credit card and tells him he now has "Streed Credit."

"This is Primal Rap" paints a detailed graffiti mural of the LA hip-hop scene, while utilizing a comedic plot to make the information memorable and entertaining. Hip-hop fans, peeps curious about hip-hop and all comedy lovers need this piece of cinematic bling in their DVD collection.
