Drink of the Week Satan's Panties Shot$6, Huka Bar & Grill, 151 E. 6100 SouthWhen a drink menu has dozens of options to make it hard to pick just one drink, I resort to selecting the drink with the most unusual or disturbing name. The pineapple smell and taste was strong, but as a shot, the flavors blended to make for a sweet and surprisingly st...  Read More

Fundraiser for Brother TimmThree years ago, we wrote about the artist and toy maker Brother Timm. Last October, Timm was riding his scooter and was struck by a driver who was texting. Not wearing his helmet, Timm says he died on the scene yet is with us today after enduring several months in a coma and ten surgeries. He was released from the hospital in April and now gets around in a wheelchair. The compensation from Timm’s accident has not yet kicked in and the artist i...  Read More

When I found out that one of the machines was churning icy morsels of piña colada, I had to try one. Before taking over partial ownership of The Jackalope, Sunyin Macri was known for her wonderful service as a bartender for over 15 years at the Twilite Lounge. Though she had intended to one day take over the Twilite Lounge, Macri learned that her hard work at Twilite would avail to nothing other than losing her job to a family member of the Lounge’s new owners. When it comes to electronic music and DJ sets more specifically I can be hard to please. Maybe it’s because I’ve never indulged in mind-altering drugs or because I get distracted easily but the droning on of the same beat for 15 minutes with minimal manipulation isn’t euphoric; it’s boring. So when the opportunity to see a DJ set from the lauded UK duo Nero I had to do a little research. As it turned out it took only about 30 seconds of a liv...  Read More

As the sun set last Wednesday on the lawn at the State Capitol, it started to rain lightly as we sat in silence at the memorial for one of our gay family members. He was a community philanthropist and all-around enjoyable person. I found it odd that in the 10 people I chatted with, out of the 200-plus who showed up, none of them knew him directly yet felt the need to come support. I'm ever impressed how SLC does so well with gentrification, save for the dumb ass that ruined Sugar House. Neighborhoods have been popping up all over town generating business while holding on to the old-school charm. When Crossroads Mall and ZCMI were in full effect, it just about killed the mom and pop shop, bringing a slow painful death to State and Main Street by the '90s. Like 9th and 9th and Broadway, so goes the SOGA -- South of Gateway Area -- and NORO -- North Rose ...  Read More

Drink of the Week Rootbeer Barrel$3, JackalopeDuring the 2nd annual Salt Lake City Bar Crawl on Saturday, July 3, the IN crew stumbled upon an interesting shooter at the Jackalope. The Root Beer Barrel is a simple shot comprised of merely Jagermeister and root beer. I watched our bartender topping two shots with a can of root beer. Drink of the Week: Key Lime Pie$6, Downstairs, 625 Main St., Park CityOverly sweet drinks, especially those with names like chocolate cake shots, don't do much for me. I was surprised to find one liquid dessert that I can endorse. The tartness of key lime pie translates superbly into a lip-smackin' shooter.
