HandMade Films was formed by Beatle guitarist George Harrison and Denis O'Brian in 1978 when the financing for Monty Python's ''Life of Brian'' fell through. Throughout the '80s HandMade Films would release a number of highly regarded films and at least one dubious failure in the Sean Penn and Madonna vehicle ''Shanghai Surprise.'' Sony Pictures released ''Life of Brian'' on Blu-ray in early in 2008 but it was the only film from HandMade Film's heyday to get the high-def treatment ...  Read More

Just as students are returning to populate classrooms the History Channel is releasing the first wave in their new ''Instant Expert'' line of informative DVDS. Each DVD is a self-contained history lesson that is a concise overview that works well on its own or as a supplement to history books and lectures. Over the past couple weeks I've become quite knowledgeable about topics as diverse as the Ancient Egypt, French Revolution, The Mayflower and its passengers, Ben Franklin, Be...  Read More

The Depot was packed with music fans 21 and up on Tuesday, August 31 for The Black Crowes concert. I arrived moments before the Crowes were scheduled to take the stage and found myself in a rather long line. I was relieved to see that though the line was long, it was moving quickly. I had barely made it in line to get my beer before the room erupted in applause and the legendary Black Crowes took the stage. The energy swirling around the Depot was exciting and I soon realize...  Read More

Since he was a small child, Cotton Marcus (Patrick Fabian) was groomed to take over his father's legacy as a minister and exorcist. Marcus has long since lost his faith and now relies on exuberance and trickery to make a living. After learning that a child was killed in an exorcism, Marcus decides that it is time to leave the business, but before he does, he intends on exposing the industry as a hoax by inviting a documentary crew to film his last exorcism. Over the course of their career, the seven-piece Arcade Fire has tackled some pretty weighty concept albums -- death, religion, and now the heaviest of them all ... the suburbs. The record encapsulates all of the hopes, dreams, and fears of the middle class. Win Butler & Co. spin tales of learning to drive (and hoping to drive away), falling in love, and trying to avoid the perils of suburban warfare. Throughout the 15 tracks, there is a constant conflict between the comforts...  Read More

It would be an incredible downer if an album called ''King of the Beach'' wasn't the feel-good record of the summer. No disappointment there -- as long as your idea of party music is trashy garage rock, mixed with trippy, electronic psychedelia. Singer Nathan Williams has no trouble spewing bratty, self-loathing lyrics (''My own friends hate my guts/So what? Who gives a ...'') or kicking out Beach Boys harmonies (''King of the Beach''). Though much of the record cruises at warped s...  Read More

It's not uncommon for an artist to put out a collection of demos. It's a cool way to give fans a sneak peek into the creative process, before the songs receive the heavy dose of studio gloss. Alkaline Trio front man Matt Skiba, however, shakes up the usual timeline with his basement recordings. Rather than release demo versions of previously released Alkaline Trio tunes, Skiba is letting fans hear the skeletons of songs he plans to release on a future solo album. Blu-ray » ''Pixies -- Live: Acoustic & Electric'' combines two previous DVD releases that were filmed during the band's reunion in 2005. The first is a set recorded at the Newport Folk Festival. Considering the Pixies made a name for themselves by playing loud and distorted rock, a folk festival might seem a little bit of a stretch but somehow the group holds its own with a collection of stripped down acoustic versions of their popular singles and album tracks including ''...  Read More

I’ve been waiting to find out who from Utah would be on the 10th season of “Biggest Loser.” After casting earlier this year in SLC, and again a few weeks ago for season 11, I knew we would have at least one Utahn to add to the list of locals losing weight on TV. ''Steel Magnolias'' is one of a handful of plays known for its outstanding women's roles. It was a play before it was a film, and on stage, Robert Harling's piece has an all-female cast. It was originally staged Off-Broadway in 1987, and has been performed on Broadway and extensively nationwide since then. It’s also probably quite unusual that the author of the musical, Sam Wessels, started writing ''sam i was'' just a week after beginning treatment for leukemia, finished the first act during his third month of chemotherapy, and began the second act eight months later when he reached the end of weekly rounds of high dosage chemo. “sam i was” is the 24-year-old author’s fifth musical. When I heard that Gym Class Heroes emcee Travie McCoy was putting out a solo record, I assumed that he would take the music in a different direction than his full-time band. Sure enough, he did. Just not the direction I expected. The record has an even lighter feel than the Heroes' emo-inspired hip-hop, with McCoy opting for a collection of breezy summer jams. I didn't think that anything on Taio Cruz's breakthrough second album could be nearly as catchy as ''Break Your Heart.'' I was proven wrong within the very first track. ''Dynamite,'' the album opener and second single is just as dancey and even more upbeat (and thankfully doesn't cause you to think ''I'm just gonna break, break, break, break your heart'' for the rest of the day). Due to label troubles and various other setbacks, it took almost three years for Big Boi to release his solo debut. Three years. Ever since the early '90s, Big Boi and his OutKast partner Andre 3000 have pushed the boundaries of rap music. ''Sir Lucious'' is no exception. Big Boi never stands still, moving fro...  Read More

My introduction to Jean-Michel Basquiat came when I went to see David Bowie as Andy Warhol in Julian Schnabel's 1996 film ''Basquiat.'' Since then, I've become more aware of his work but I've never become an enthusiastic fan of his style. His story is fascinating even though it is sadly familiar. As an artist, Basquiat was loved, loathed and died before he could have his renaissance. Despite having 100 years of filmmaking history to look back on, there are times when it is abundantly clear that Hollywood has learned nothing from the past. Fortunately, first-time director Aaron Schneider either picked up the fundamental idea that a good script and great actors make for an enjoyable film. The concept is easy enough, but the lesson remains hard to learn. ''Get Low'' features a fantastic cast that includes Robert Duvall, Bill Murray and Sissy Spacek. The story ...  Read More

Clocking in at over four hours, the film is epic in every sense of the word. Blu-ray » In 2007, Japanese director Takashi Mikke released ''Sukiyaki Western Django.'' It was a strange tribute to Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns that I desperately wanted to love but couldn't. Kim Ji-woon's ''The Good, the bad, the Weird'' is everything that Mikke's film should have been. It's filled with over-the-top style, outrageous action sequences and madcap characters, but it never becomes so laughably bizarre that it feels like a parody rather than homage. Seri...  Read More
